Thomas Gray V Linacre
Our first game of the season was away at Thomas Grey. The Linacre line-up had some new faces. All were keen to get the season underway.
Linacre made a lively start, with a long range opening shot by Shea Maloney, which was wide of the post. Charlie Guy started brightly, chasing everything down. Callum Dunn on his debut had an early shot on goal. He was then called upon to defend and showed he was more than up to the job. Shea Maloney was beginning to manage things and sent a long pass for Leah Newman to run on to, just too long. Sean Alty defended a corner, standing his ground in the face of the Thomas Gray attack. Joseph Johnson began to get busy in defence, sticking to his player. Daniel Mikolajewski sent a great ball out from the back to Leah Newman. Thomas Gray went on the attack and their striker went through the Linacre defence and finished off the move with a finely struck shot which Daniel Mikolajewski couldn’t get his hands on, 1-0. Leah Newman launched an enormous free kick from the middle of the field and it dipped just short of Shea Maloney’s head. Play went up the other end with a corner for Thomas Gray. Callum Dunn was strong in defence, determined to thwart their attack. Daniel Mikolajewski was called upon to make two excellent saves in quick succession. Play went up the other end again as Leah Newman made a good shot on goal, which was saved. Leah took the corner which bounced off the bar. Thomas Gray went on the attack again and our defence was caught napping, Callum Dunn was the last man and Daniel Mikolajewski had no chance with the resulting shot, 2-0.
The second half began with a change of personnel, Callum Dunn and Leah came off, making way for Callum Jones (on his Linacre debut) and Milli-Ruth (on her Linacre debut and fresh from becoming the U11s British Taekwondo champion).
Thomas Gray got an early goal, 3-0. In another attack on our goal, Daniel Mikolajewski again made a fabulous save. The opposition were pressing constantly, asking questions of our defence. Callum Jones made several strong tackles and Milli-Ruth was not afraid to tackle anybody. Charlie Guy came off to make way for Mackenzie James (also on his Linacre debut). Mackenzie immediately got to work, marking his man. Shea tried to get attacking moves started, but sadly Thomas Gray defence were always too strong. Two own goals followed, 5-0. Callum Jones was putting himself in the way of the Thomas Gray attack, blocking shots and tackling. Callum Dunn was not giving up without a fight and sent a great ball up field out of defence, but nobody was on the end of it.
MOM – Callum Dunn
The team kept trying in the face of an onslaught of attacking play. We had several new players and we will get stronger as the season moves on. The team played with the right spirit, supporting and encouraging each other.
Thanks to Tom for preparing the team. Thanks as always to the Linacre faithful, your support is crucial and very welcome. Thanks to Leah’s mum and Mackenzie’s dad for help with lifts.
Onwards and upwards.
